Art and History Museum – Small Narthex

The construction of the Jubilee Park was linked to the fiftieth anniversary of Belgium. To add lustre to this event, a national exhibition of works of art and industrial products was organized in 1880 as well as a retrospective exhibition of ancient art in the spirit of the South Kensington Museum in London, opened in 1857. As the venue for this event, architect Gédéon Bordiau designed a building consisting of two wings connected by a semicircular colonnade, interrupted in the middle by a huge triumphal arch that was to emphasise the perspective on the Rue de la Loi. One of these wings is now the Art and History Museum. The small Narthex was built between 1905 and 1905 by Léopold Piron. Sturm und Klang’s performance will take place in this space, in conjunction with the exhibition Josef Hoffmann: Beyond Beauty and Modernity.
