The Project

The third edition of the ARTONOV Festival will take place in Brussels from 13 to 15 October 2017 in different locations of Art Nouveau and Art Déco: The Spirit of Places, where architecture becomes an integral part of the ritual of performance art.

Is it possible for art and performance art to interact with the architectural space in a dialogue which strengthens the spirit and the essence of the place?

The ARTONOV Festival is inspired by the international movement of Art Nouveau, both for its philosophy and for its implementation. Its objective is to generate a convergence between the performing arts, such as music, dance, theatre, fashion and visual arts, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration.

It presents a large number of artistic events both original and innovative. In total, a variety of performances by both the youth and professionals are organised within the framework of three series:

ARTONOV series: Includes large-scale productions in collaboration with internationally renowned professional artists and ensembles.

FRINGE series: Includes performances of young artists in collaboration with P.A.R.T.S, the school of La Cambre, The Royal Conservatory of Brussels and other artistic European institutions.

ATELIER series: Invests in kindergartens and primary schools in Brussels for artistic workshops and for family performances.

The ARTONOV Festival wants to offer its artists, with a priority given to emerging artists, the possibility to develop their artistic projects within a spirit of collaboration between generations, nationalities and artistic disciplines.

For the third edition, the programming team and the artists questioned how art and performance art could interact with the architectural space in a dialogue which strengths the essence of the place: the “genius loci,” the spirit of the place.

The philosophy of Art Nouveau and its’ places, the starting point of our festival, leads us to in-depth research about the spaces of other periods while keeping a common thread: to awaken the senses in a common artistic gesture between performance and architecture.

Architecture is becoming part of the “ritual” of performance and an indispensable aspect, all too often overlooked.

The ARTONOV Festival’s ambition is to reconnect itself to the concept of ‘total art’, in the sense which Henry van de Velde understood it: to unify the art of music, visual arts, architecture, dance, design, theatre and video to offer our young Europeans a work space catering to their creativity, curiosity and their professional emancipation.

With an international trajectory, the discovery of unusual architectural spaces, innovative programming, the multiplicity of viewpoints linked to the questioning of Nature / Culture and above all the convergence between music, theatre, dance, fashion and visual arts makes ARTONOV an innovative tool, dynamic and optimistic.
